The CLEAR Framework - Your Template for Perfect AI Prompts

Stop Winging It: The 5-Element Formula That Works Every Time

Ever wish you had a checklist for writing great AI prompts? Something that would help you get consistently good results instead of playing prompt roulette?

Enter the CLEAR framework—five elements that transform rambling requests into precision-guided AI instructions. Used by professionals who depend on AI daily, this approach eliminates guesswork and delivers reliable results.

CLEAR: Your New Best Friend

C Context: Set the scene
L Length: Specify your desired response size
E Examples: Show what you want
A Action: State your request clearly
R Role: Define the AI's perspective

Let's break this down with real examples.

Context: The Foundation Everything Builds On

Context tells the AI what world you're operating in. Include relevant background, constraints, and the situation you're dealing with.

Weak: "Help me write better emails"

Strong: "I'm a project manager who needs to send weekly updates to executives who only have 2-3 minutes to read them"

The strong version gives the AI crucial information about your role, your audience, and the constraints you're working within. This context shapes every aspect of the response.

Length: Size Matters More Than You Think

The difference between "explain quantum physics" and "explain quantum physics in two sentences for a curious teenager" is massive. Always specify your desired length or format.

Length Specifications

  • "Brief summary" or "detailed explanation"
  • Word count: "200 words" or "500-word article"
  • Number of items: "5 key points" or "3 recommendations"
  • Time to read: "2-minute read" or "executive summary"

Examples: Show, Don't Just Tell

Instead of asking for "engaging social media content," show the AI what engaging looks like to you. One concrete example provides more clarity than paragraphs of description.

Example prompt: "Write posts in this style: ✨ 'Monday motivation: Your coffee might be strong, but your goals should be stronger. What's one thing you're tackling this week that scares you a little? (That's usually where the magic happens.) #mondayvibes'"

Action: The Power of Strong Verbs

Replace wishy-washy requests with clear action words. Precision in your action verb leads to precision in the response.

Strong Action Verbs

  • Analyze, evaluate, compare, critique
  • Create, design, develop, compose
  • Explain, describe, outline, summarize
  • Recommend, suggest, propose, advise
  • Translate, rewrite, adapt, transform

Role: Give AI a Professional Identity

"Act as a financial advisor," "from the perspective of a busy parent," or "as an experienced teacher" completely changes how the AI approaches your request. The role provides a lens through which every decision gets filtered.

The CLEAR Template in Action

Here's the template that's transforming how professionals work with AI:

Context: [Your situation and background]
Role: Act as a [specific expert/perspective]
Action: [What you want - analyze, create, explain, etc.]
Examples: [Show the format/style if needed]
Length: [Brief, detailed, number of items, etc.]

Before and After: The CLEAR Difference

Before: "Help me with my presentation"

After:

Context: I'm presenting quarterly sales results to the board next week
Role: Act as a presentation consultant
Action: Create an outline for a 15-minute presentation
Examples: Include sections like: Executive Summary, Key Metrics, Challenges, Opportunities, Next Steps
Length: Detailed outline with talking points for each section
