Part 09: Staying Safe in Cryptocurrency
Essential Security Principles
1. Never Share Your Private Keys
Not with friends, family, or "support staff." No legitimate service will ever ask for your private key. If someone asks for it, it's a scam
2. Beware of Phishing
Always double-check website URLs. Bookmark official sites. Be suspicious of emails claiming to be from wallet companies. Never click links in unsolicited messages.
3. Use Strong Passwords
Create unique, complex passwords for each account. Use a password manager. Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible.
4. Backup Your Recovery Phrase
Write it down on paper (never digitally). Store it in a safe place (or multiple safe places). Never photograph it or store it in cloud services. Treat it like the key to your life savings—because it is.
5. Start Small
Practice with small amounts first. Test sending and receiving before committing large sums. Learn from small mistakes rather than expensive ones.
6. Do Your Own Research (DYOR)
Don't invest based on social media hype. Understand what you're buying. Be skeptical of guaranteed returns. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Red Flags and Scam Warning Signs
- Promises of guaranteed returns.
- Pressure to act immediately.
- Requests for private keys or seed phrases.
- Unsolicited investment advice.
- Celebrity endorsements (often fake).
- Projects with anonymous teams.
- Lack of clear documentation or whitepaper.
